Basic Training for SeisComP3 - Beginner Course

We are again announcing our very popular Basic Training for SeisComP3. This Beginner Course is perfect for new SeisComP3 users who wish to get quickly started with a productive SeisComP3 system. You get to learn about SeisComP3 from us - the main developers of this wide-spread OpenSource software package for real-time earthquake monitoring.

The training covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to characteristics of SeisComP3.
  • Installation of the latest SeisComP3 release.
  • Generation of station information including responses.
  • Setup of the data acquisition, storage and distribution using seedlink, arclink or fedsnws.
  • Configuration of the automatic and interactive data processing modules through the new graphical user interface.
  • Data management utilities.
  • Tuning of SeisComP3 for local, regional and global earthquake monitoring including the phase pickers, locator, associator and magnitudes.
  • Practical training (focusing on real-time playbacks, off-line playbacks and hands-on tuning).
  • Participants may bring their own datasets and use it for tuning.

The training is highly hands-on oriented and very intensive. Trainees get to learn and to practice actively at all times. Therefore, the registration to the training is open to everyone but limited to a maximum of 8 persons. It will be held at gempa offices in Potsdam, Germany. Course fee

The course fee including all taxes due in Germany is 1,904 € per participant - for commercial and non-commercial institutes or companies.

Scholarships by gempa

We are able to provide one scholarship for this training. The scholarship funds the course fee only. No travel expenses or any additional local costs are covered.

Candidates applying for a scholarship need to provide:

  • A brief CV including the level of experience in Seismology, Linux and SeisComP3
  • A short description of the project or the planned activity for which SeisComP3 will be used
  • A letter of recommendation by the advisor at the host institute or company including a confirmation that all travel expenses other than the course fee are available to the applicant.
  • A confirmation that gempa GmbH may send marketing information on trainings, events and products to the applicant.

The application must be submitted by email to: no later than 30 June 2019. The decisions will be sent by 31 July 2019.

Terms and conditions

Participants bring their own computer with a modern Linux installed and access to internet. We recommend to choose Linux distributions with Long-Term-Support (LTS). Alternatively, we can provide Linux in a Virtual Machine for which the participant must have VirtualBox installed. The participant will receive the VM about one week before the start of the training and is responsible for the testing and functioning on the computer.

The course fee does not cover any travel costs for accommodation, boarding and transportation. Snacks and drinks will be provided during the course. Contact us if you need help to find your hotel.
